The Switch will provide ScanWind with second-generation drive train packages that combine a 4.25 MW direct-drive PMG with a FPC to be used in offshore wind turbine development efforts.
The harsh winds off the Norwegian coastline provide excellent opportunities for wind power generation, but place high demands on machine reliability. The Switch previously developed a 3.7 MW direct-drive, gearless PMG with a full-power, redundant, liquid-cooled converter package for ScanWind. These generator and converter packages have achieved exceptional operating availability, averaging 97%, in spite of turbulent conditions and high wind speeds.
