vessels of the future

Vessels of the future

Green. There are two types of green in the world: money and sustainable technology. Both are important. If you don’t have money, it’s a problem. Whereas if you don’t have green technology to help protect our environment, it’s even more of a problem – an existential problem.

At Yaskawa Environmental Energy / The Switch, we know you too are concerned about both types of green. So, we’re doing our best to provide the most affordable and economical future-forward technology available for today’s and tomorrow’s shipping vessels.

In doing so, we ask ourselves a lot of questions. Are we evaluating the necessary parameters for today and the lifetime of the vessel? What will happen during the next 10 to 15 years regarding regulations and different fuel alternatives? Are the vessels built today compatible? What about zero-emissions harbors and fjords? Is it cheaper to hire a zero-emission tug? Or install retro zero-emissions solutions? Or is there another solution?

Looking into the future is difficult – and relax, I don’t know how to do it either. But what I am sure about is that we will see new technology arriving in the next decade to save fuel and reduce emissions. We will see new energy sources. We will see new fuels. We will see better energy storage systems, and we will see new ways of converting energy to movement on sea and land.

Power electronics and semiconductors are, in my mind, a key element to have the flexibility to use different energy sources, different energy storages and different energy loads – and all of that you get from a converter system. A good, controlled converter system, like The Switch DC-Hub, gives you an efficient energy flow with low losses and flexibility on connections, sources and energy storages to enable the vessel to meet requirements and regulations while saving money – and at the same time be prepared for the unexpected.

Our solutions for DC-Hubs and permanent magnet machines are designed with high efficiency in mind. They are designed for flexibility and engineered to be future flexible. This will not only save you money in operating your vessel but also reduce the footprint that your vessel makes.

Many vessels are prepared for the changes that will arrive – that must arrive. Still, all too often, it is just easier to look at where are we today and ask what should I do today? But then you might end up with a vessel or a solution that is just expensive scrap metal – both for the shipowner and for the environment.

Our solution is here to help you with being future flexible. The Switch DC-Hub is prepared for the changes that must come – and ready for the unexpected.

Yaskawa Environmental Energy / The Switch is ready for the future today, are you?
