Second order for Dong Fang; first collaboration with Moventas

The Switch has signed a new agreement with Dong Fang for a 3 MW drive train to be designed in collaboration with Finland-based Moventas, who will deliver the gear solution for the turbine. The aim is to optimize the entire package for Dong Fang to sell to the Chinese market. The new order comes right after the successful startup of The Switch 1.5 MW direct-driven generators.

Vantaa, Finland  February 2, 2010 – The Switch will team up with Moventas to design an optimized drive train and gear solution of internationally high standards for Dong Fang to sell on the Chinese market. The Switch will deliver its medium-speed permanent magnet generator (PMG) and full-power converter (FPC) package, known as The Switch Drive™. Moventas will provide the gear solution.

The two companies will collaborate closely on integrating the design of the electrical drive train and the gear box, so that the configuration works as an optimized package. The first prototype will be delivered to Dong Fang in October 2010.

For Moventas, this agreement represents a huge opportunity in the Chinese market, while it marks a significant milestone in continued collaboration between Dong Fang and The Switch.

“Dong Fang has been especially satisfied with the positive experience from our first delivery of the direct-driven PMG. The new order was placed only a month after the PMG successfully passed testing,” says Juha Tuominen, Key Account Manager at The Switch for Dong Fang. “They want to take advantage of The Switch PMG technology and be able to use The Switch FPCs also in new turbine models.”
